The £210,000 project to pedestrianise part of Burnham-On-Sea’s High Street took another step forward this week when surveyors began design work in the town centre.
The county council’s highways team have been recording measurements and other information to help put together the designs for the project.
The plans will go on show to the public for the first time next month. The Civic Pride Working Group has hired the former Thresher’s shop in College Street between November 4 and 6th when the scheme will go on show.
County Council spokesman Elizabeth Kulh told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Somerset County Council has been commissioned by Sedgemoor District Council to design a scheme to pedestrianise Burnham’s High Street between Cross Street and Adam Street. Survey work was undertaken this week in connection with the scheme.”
Last month, Sedgemoor District Council’s Executive unanimously agreed that over £158,000 of funding can be spent on creating the pedestrian-only zone, which looks likely to be in place 24 hours a day.
The Civic Pride Working Group hope the scheme can be introduced by Easter, when Adam Street and Cross Street will both become one-way roads in alternative directions to divert traffic away from the centre of town.
