Parking charges will not rise in Burnham-On-Sea or Highbridge over the coming year, it has been confirmed this week.
Town councillors welcomed the decision by Sedgemoor District Council to freeze the charges for a period of 12 months.
Sedgemoor raised car park day ticket prices last year in line with the VAT increase, but its staff have compared the current charges against other similar-sized districts and found they are in line, therefore recommended no increase in costs.
“This is very welcome news to residents and visitors who use our car parks throughout the year,” the town council’s transport representative, Cllr Chris Williams, told Burnham-On-Sea.com.
Sedgemoor’s Executive Committee said, however, that its income from car parking could still increase next year due to the introduction of Civil Parking Enforcement (CPE) whereby local authorities become responsible for enforcing on-street parking controls instead of the police.
Sedegmoor is among four district councils in Somerset that is supporting the County Council’s Civil Parking Enforcement application which will see it buying enforcement services from the County and issuing fines from early 2012.
The district council currently oversees 771 parking spaces in Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge.
