A parking shake-up looks set to go ahead in part of Burnham-On-Sea’s town centre under proposals unveiled this week to improve traffic flow.
Town councillors and Burnham’s Town Centre Manager want to halt illegal parking in College Street where motorists frequently park on double yellow lines, causing congestion outside Lloyds Bank, Bet Fred and Abbott and Frost.
“We’re proposing that loading restrictions are introduced between 10am-4pm in this area of College Street to make it easier for traffic wardens to book drivers and address the problems,” explained Town Centre Manager Bev Milner Simonds.
Estate agent Julian Frost, pictured right, welcomed the news, telling Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Motorists have no respect for the double yellow lines here in College Street, creating congestion on the corner and blocking our forecourt area.”
“It’s only time before there’s a serious crash.”
“I’d be pleased to see a loading ban introduced. I would like to see more motorists who park here given on-the-spot fines – it’s time for some changes to make it safe again.”
Meanwhile, two new 1-hour parking bays look set to be created outside Burnham’s former Job Centre in the High Street, as first reported here last year.
Town councillors on the Town Projects Committee have given their backing to the proposals this week, which are set to go before February’s full Town Council meeting for a final decision.
