Sedgemoor District Council is planning major upgrades of several parks in Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge, it has confirmed this week.
The council wants to replace outdated childrens’ play equipment and also upgrade seating at three parks – Crosses Penn near Burnham’s Manor Gardens, Coleridge Gardens (pictured right) and Stiling Close in Highbridge.
Formal ‘invitations to tender’ for the work to upgrade the parks are due to be returned over the coming week, the council told Burnham-On-Sea.com.
“The tenders will be evaluated and works contracts will then be awarded. Subject to a successful tendering process we hope to begin these upgrades in late July,” said council spokeswoman Sam Taylor.
Consultation with local residents is also underway to consider the future of the park at Talbot Close in Highbridge, right.
Sam said: “Talbot Close is a small park with equipment reaching the end of its useful life.”
“Local residents have been asked what they would like to see in the park and asked to choose between a traditional play park, community garden with vegetable planting, or a community garden with shrubs and informal play equipment installed.”
Alongside this, Apex Park’s skate park in Highbridge is getting a £73,000 upgrade, as we featured here this week. A £64,000 refurbishment of Southwell Gardens play area in Highbridge was also completed in March, as we reported here.
“Sedgemoor District Council is keen to upgrade local parks and young people’s recreational facilities,” added Sam. “A major’ ‘phase one’ investment project, costing £113,000, was completed to schedule in 2013 and we are now pressing ahead with the next phase.”
