Hundreds of paper aeroplanes are expected to take to the air in Burnham-On-Sea on Bank Holiday Sunday as the 4th World Paper Aeroplane Championship returns to the town centre.
Jets, gliders and even the odd stealth bomber are expected to be crafted from a single A4 sheet of paper as rookie pilots launch their planes down the make shift high street runway aiming to fly the plane as far as possible.
The fun free event takes place between 10am and 3pm in the High Street and is a fantastic opportunity for people of all ages and families to have great fun together.
Detailed instructions for plane designs will be available so that anyone can come along and create their own paper aeroplane in an instant. Or competitors can go freestyle and use their imagination and paper folding skills to make their own unique design.
The winner will be whoever manages to fly their plane the furthest distance before landing. The current course record is a staggering 34.3 metres set in 2016.
The event is provided by Burnham-on-Sea Chamber of Trade & Commerce in conjunction with Sedgemoor District Council and is free for anyone to come and take part.
Sally Raynes, Event Director at Wacky Nation, said: “Every year the event attracts a fantastic cross section of ages ranging from three years old up to participants in their eighties, many creating and flying the designs they have learnt in their childhood. It’s always really great fun and very unpredictable.”
Keith Elliott, Vice Chair from Burnham-On-Sea Chamber of Trade & Commerce, added: “This is a great opportunity for people of all ages to have fun and to also have the opportunity to visit the varied shops on the High Street and surrounding streets, as well as relaxing in one of Burnham’s many cafes.”
