A busy road through the centre of Burnham-On-Sea remains closed after a car slammed into a building in the early hours of Monday.
The yellow Polo pictured here was left embedded in the wall of a block of flats in Oxford Street at 1.15am, forcing shocked residents to be evacuated.
Amid concerns that the property, Crown Gardens, could be structurally unsound, Oxford Street was closed off and will remain shut until after a full building inspection tomorrow (Tuesday).
Keith Bolton, a director of the firm that owns the building, pictured right, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “The car crashed into the building and the force of it badly damaged the flat.”
“Fortunately, the couple inside were fine. They were lucky because the impact of the crash pushed the bath from their bathroom into the bedroom.”
An eyewitness at the scene told Burnham-On-Sea.com that the youngster driving the car had escaped serious injuries when an air bag in the car deployed.
A resident at the building, Christine Casling, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We heard a loud bang at the time of the crash – it woke us up with a jump. It was quite a shock. We’re glad no-one was seriously hurt.”
Two casualties received treatment by the ambulance service at the scene and the fire service said that a building inspector had been called as there was “extensive damage” to the property.
Motorists are being asked to expect delays in the area due to the road closure. Diversions are in operation around the scene.
