A Hollywood blockbuster which was partially filmed on top of Brean Down, near Burnham-On-Sea, was nominated for two Oscars on Tuesday (January 22nd).
A number of scenes in ‘Elizabeth: The Golden Age’ starring Cate Blanchett (pictured right) were filmed at Brean Down during the summer of 2006. The resort came to a standstill for several days as the film were filmed.
On Tuesday, Cate Blanchett was nominated for an Oscar in the category for ‘best performance by an actress in a leading role’ for playing Queen Elizabeth. The movie was also nominated for a second Oscar for achievement in costume design.
The big-budget movie was released in the UK last November and went on to earn millions of pounds at the box office.
Burnham-On-Sea.com reported in June 2006 how huge tents and props had been craned into position on Brean Down by the production team as filming got underway.
The producers even contacted this Website to appeal for extras to come forward – and several of our forum users starred as foot soldiers in the film (although any hopes they had for Oscars have now obviously been dashed!).
