Riders from Burnham-On-Sea’s Somerset Rebels took on a team of fans, and a group of DJs from Somerset’s Orchard FM radio station during a special go-garting challenge this week.
The fast-paced event was full of thrills and spills and was watched by large crowds at the South West Karting Centre in Cheddar on Saturday March 4th.
It culminated in Ross Wheelaghan winning the final for the fans team, ahead of Gareth Cross, also representing the fans, with Pavel Ondrasik, Ray Dickson and Glenn Cunningham picking up the minor places for the Rebels riders.
Following the rostrum celebrations, Rebels riders Glenn Cunningham and Magnus Zetterstrom took to the track on mini moto bikes to entertain the fans who had come to watch – and they were also joined by British Superbikers Matthew and James Cox.
With the pre-season formalities now completed, the Somerset ‘Mike Manning Audio’ Rebels turn their attention to winning their first piece of silverware in 2006 when they take on local rivals Newport Wasps next weekend in a two-leg challenge match for the BCA Vehicle Remarketing Trophy.
A successful press and practice session was also held on Friday when the Rebels riders were introduced to the assembled press and sponsors.
The message from the riders to the packed venue was that nothing less than reaching the end of season play-offs would be acceptable. The team are looking to add to the Premier League Fours Championship they won in 2005, their first ever trophy victory since joining the Premier League in 2002.
