New calls have been made for safety improvements to Burnham-On-Sea High Street to address the long-running problem of vehicles being driven the wrong direction along one-way parts of the town centre.
Over the summer months, residents and traders often see vehicles being driven the wrong way along Burnham’s High Street.
On Saturday, two vehicles were spotted in the High Street between the junctions of College Street and Cross Street in the space of just 30 minutes, as pictured above. Several businesses are concerned that an accident is ‘waiting to happen’.
Julie Dean at High Street florist Flowers and Things told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “The problem has been ongoing for years, but something should be done to address it before there’s an accident with an oncoming vehicle or a pedestrian.”
“I’d like to see ‘no entry’ painted on the road surface at the busy junctions since some drivers just don’t seem to see the no-entry signs.”
And Phil Hemming at Home Hardware added: “It does happen frequently along this stretch of the High Street, particularly during the summer when there are visitors about, and it’s difficult to know what could be done to stop it. Fortunately, the drivers usually go along slowly and tend to quickly realise what they’ve done and reverse back.”
