Several residents in the Burnham-On-Sea area have this week been officially named as torch bearers for next year’s London Olympic Games.
Burnham charity runner Jason Vickers, who has raised more than £8,000 for charity over the past seven years, will be one of the 8,000 torchbearers taking part in the Olympic Torch Relay.
Jason told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “I am absolutely delighted to have been picked – it will be an exciting year!”
Burnham-based community gardener Sarah Milner Simonds has also been chosen, but there was disappointment for other nominees.
The Olympic Flame will arrive from Greece on 18th May 2012 and an 8,000 mile Torch Relay will begin at Land’s End on 19th May before travelling across the whole UK in 70 days.
The final torchbearer will carry the Flame into the Olympic Stadium during the Opening Ceremony on 27th July 2012 when the cauldron will be lit, and the Games of the XXX Olympiad will be opened.
Hopes that the Olympic Flame would come through Burnham-On-Sea or Highbridge in 2012 were dashed last month with the unveiling of the official route – as we reported here.
