Part of Burnham-On-Sea’s Marine Drive renamed Old Station Approach

-

Part of a road through Burnham-On-Sea looks has been renamed this week as pary of a project to celebrate the town’s railway heritage.

A stretch of Marine Drive that runs between the Pier Street junction and the entrance to Burnham Holiday Village has been renamed Old Station Approach.

Burnham Railway Heritage Group also hopes to bring an original railway signal post to the former railway coal yard site next to the Catholic Church in Marine Drive, where Burnham Railway Station was sited until it closed in 1962, as pictured here.

Town councillors agreed the name change earlier this year after considering several suggestions, including Station Drive and Station Road.

Cllr Nick Tolley said: “I think the name is very suitable given the location of Burnham’s old railway station. I’m sure it will become an important part of the town’s heritage.”

The Railway Heritage Group’s Ann Popham said one new road sign had been installed by the traffic lights and a further one had been installed by the Holiday Village entrance. The group welcomes donations for the project.
