Youngsters at Burnham-On-Sea’s Octopus Children’s Centre are now able to use the latest early learning technology thanks to a donation from computing giant IBM.
The company has donated a KidSmart unit to the centre as one of the benefits being delivered through Southwest One, a joint venture company set up between Somerset County Council, IBM, Taunton Deane Borough Council, and Avon and Somerset Police.
The KidSmart programme is aimed at helping young children, their parents and teachers.
It centres around a colourful, childproof computer unit that seeks to encourage youngsters to enjoy learning and help the adults around them become comfortable with the latest technology. At the same time, the children learn how to operate and interact with everyday technology in a fun way.
Julie Bennett, Daycare Manager of the Octopus Children’s Centre, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “The children have loved playing on the new KidSmart equipment, they are always using it and have lots of fun.”
“It re-motivates children to use technology and they particularly enjoy the interactive programs. We have also had positive feedback from parents who have been impressed with the equipment.”
Cllr David Huxtable, Somerset County Council Cabinet Member for Resources, added: “This is good news for children in Burnham. We’re pleased to see investment in the future of children and this scheme can only be helpful.”
