A fundraising night at Highbridge’s Oaktree arena on Saturday (February 9th) raised more than £1,300 and was boosted by the auction of a celebrity sportsman’s cap.
The auction of the hat signed by Formula One racing driver Jenson Button attracted plenty of attention during the evening.
It raised £220 in a raffle and when Oaktree owner Bill Hancock was named the winner he decided to put it back up for auction, raising a further £130.
Dozens of people attended the event, which featured entertainment from local covers band Combyne Arvester.
Organiser Debbie Hancock told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We had a great turnout and thank everyone who supported us. We are really pleased to have raised a total of £1,364 for our Air Fence fund.”
“The hat was kindly given to us by Winston Hand, a big supporter of the Rebels, whom we thank. A big thank you also goes to Phil, our DJ, and the Combyne Arvester band who did a great job.”
The Oaktree is trying to raise £30,000 to buy a new air fence which will allow it stage some of speedway’s larger events, such as the World Cup and Grand Prix Qualifiers, which would attract large crowds from all over Europe.
