Burnham councillors give ‘thumbs down’ to cinema phone mast plan

-

Burnham-On-Sea councillors have this week given the thumbs down to controversial proposals to build a mobile phone mast on top of the town’s cinema.

Burnham-On-Sea.com reported on Wednesday how O2 had submitted a controversial planning application to build the mast, disguised as a flag pole, plus three separate antennae on the roof of the Ritz Cinema in Victoria Street.

Members of Burnham’s Planning Applications Committee expressed concerns about the proposed design.

“We have concerns about this proposal given that the cinema is in an conservation area,” said Planning Committee Chairman Councillor Peter Clayton.

“While we appreciate there maybe a need for this mast, we question whether this is an appropriate location.”

The committee recommended that the application is refused when it goes before Sedgemoor District Council’s Development Control Committee for a final decision in the coming weeks.

O2 says the new antenna would act as a replacement for the temporary phone mast currently installed next to the RNLI lifeboat station in Marine Drive.

Its application states: “The slimline monopole with integrated antennae has been kept as slimline as possible so as not to impact on the surrounding area.”

Local residents have until December 4th to register their comments about the proposal to Sedgemoor planners.
