Burnham-On-Sea police have this week warned that a series of car number plate thefts in the town could be linked to petrol station crime.
Over the last month, number plates have been stolen from cars parked in Burnham’s Players Lane, Oxford Street, The High Street, Stoddens Lane and Sedgemoor Services.
Inspector Roger Tolley told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We have suspicions that thieves are taking the number plates to disguise their own vehicles while carrying out thefts of fuel from petrol stations.”
“They switch the stolen number plate onto their own vehicle, fill up with fuel and then drive off without paying, thinking they can evade capture.”
He added: “Several thefts have occurred in the town during recent weeks, and we would ask motorists in the Burnham and Highbridge are to be extra vigilant and report anyone acting suspiciously around vehicles. Motorists can also consider buying tamper-proof screws to fix their number plates.”
Anyone with information regarding the incidents should call Avon and Somerset Police’s new non-emergency number, 101.
