A high-tech number plate recognition camera which was introduced at a busy road junction in Brean last autumn has already helped police make six arrests.
Burnham-On-Sea.com first reported last September how a roadside number plate camera had been installed in Church Road, as pictured here, in a bid to crackdown on travelling criminals and tackle vehicle crime.
Burnham police’s Neighbourhood Team Inspector Sam Williams revealed on Monday that the camera has been “incredibly helpful” in leading to several arrests.
He said: “The ANPR (automatic number plate recognition) camera at Brean has been running for several months now over the winter and has directly led to six arrests of motorists.”
“It’s been an incredibly helpful resource for us – a great success.”
He added that plans for a camera in Burnham-On-Sea are still being progressed and further news about this is expected over the coming months.
