Fears that radioactive waste from Sellafield is being driven through the Burnham-On-Sea area to Hinkley Point have been rejected this week.
PCAH (Parents Concerned About Hinkley) claims that highly radioactive waste is being transported between the two power stations.
Spokeswoman Jo Brown said: “Under the new national nuclear waste and decommissioning contract highly radioactive Sellafield waste is being driven to Hinkley by road for processing prior to overseas shipment.”
“Under the new contract, waste from any UK site can be transported to any other UK nuclear site without local consultation and without taking account of high public health risk in areas like the Somerset coastal communities which are very close to, and downwind, of the Hinkley site.”
However, Bill Hamilton of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) rejected the concerns, saying: “The allegations are completely without foundation.”
