Nick Clegg, the leader of the Liberal Democrat party, made a ‘flying’ visit to Burnham-On-Sea on Thursday (September 11th) when he joined crewmembers of the town’s rescue hovercrafts for a training session.
Mr Clegg met BARB crewmembers and was given a tour of the charity’s seafront station before he clambered onboard the Spirit Of Lelaina hovercraft, as pictured above, for a flight along the beach to the town’s lighthouse.
He described his flight as “bumpy, noisy, and exhilarating” and went on to praise the work of the charity.
He added: “The volunteers are providing a public emergency service in an area that is deceptively dangerous. It was very interesting see for myself how a community-run organisation can provide what is literally a lifeline service.”
Mr Clegg was accompanied during his visit by the Liberal Democrat’s parliamentary candidate for the Wells constituency, Tessa Munt, and the leader of Sedgemoor’s Liberal Democrats, Joe Leach.
A camera crew from BBC One’s Politics Show was among the media who filmed Thursday’s visit.
The group moved on to Cheddar for a formal Liberal Democrat supporters dinner in the evening.
