A large new Proper Job DIY store is to open this week in Highbridge in place of the town’s former Co-Op supermarket, creating six new jobs.
As first reported by Burnham-On-Sea.com, the building off Southwell Crescent in Highbridge has been bought by the DIY chain.
Speaking to Burnham-On-Sea.com, Proper Job store manager Peter Tilley explained that the new store is on track to open in the middle of this week – on either Wednesday or Thursday.
“This is a great location for us to open a new, larger store – our 16th in the UK. It’s a perfect size for a large outlet of Proper Job, it has ample parking, is close to the M5 motorway junction, and is located well for Bridgwater, Highbridge and the nearby villages of Mark and the Huntspills.”
Proper Job’s opening at the site comes after the Highbridge Co-Op supermarket shut down in October 2018, as pictured above.
Highbridge Chairman of Trade Mike Murphy says the opening is “great news” for the town.
He told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “The news of Highbridge being chosen for the 16th UK Proper Job superstore is yet another confirmation that the town has reached the turning point in its fortunes.”
“Proper Job represents another new destination for major area footfall into Highbridge.”
He added: “Naturally, I am concerned that this will impact on other local DIY businesses, in particular Highbridge DIY, where the owner has given many years excellent service as an electrician, a key cutting service and as a DIY materials and tools stockist. He is also a vital part of the annual Chamber Xmas lights display.”
“However, Highbridge is rapidly ‘joining up the dots’ of renewal currently supported by the fabulous new Sopha furniture store with its all floors, lift and coffee shop.”
“Clearly the bar has been lifted by this and other destination magnets Aldi and Travelodge joining Asda and the coming Highbridge Hotel/YMCA indoor sports facility.”
“With expanding industrial areas and already more than a thousand homes scheduled Highbridge is set to boom. We can only think that the vision seen by the management of national firms such as Proper Job seeing the potential of Highbridge will put our town on the map and herald a widening prosperity to the area.”
Proper Job says there are no plans to make changes to its popular Burnham-On-Sea town centre store, which is located in Adam Street.
