A new Brent Knoll community speedwatch group has launched with the aim of making roads through the village safer.
The group, pictured here, has held its first patrols along roads in the area, supported by Burnham Police, in a bid to reduce concerns about speeding.
A Burnham Police spokesman told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “It’s a private group of residents, who are supported by the constabulary, giving up their own time to monitor traffic coming through the village of Brent Knoll.”
“The main aims are to reduce the speed of vehicles and to help protect members of the community including pedestrians and children.”
“It also aims to raise awareness of the dangers of speeding, contributing to communities feeling safer and being safer where they live.”
Community Speedwatch (CSW) is a national initiative where active members of local communities join with the support of the Police to monitor speeds of vehicles using speed detection devices.
Vehicles exceeding the speed limit can be referred to the Police with the aim of educating drivers to reduce their speeds.
In cases where education is blatantly ignored and evidence of repeat or excessive offences is collated (even across county borders), enforcement and prosecution follow.
