A new betting shop looks set to open in Burnham-On-Sea town centre after town councillors last night (Wednesday) gave a ‘thumbs-up’ to the firm’s licence application.
The former William Hill bookmaker shop on the corner of Victoria Street and Princess Street has been taken over by a new business, Star Sports.
The firm has applied to Sedgemoor District Council for a new premises licence with opening times of 7am-10pm daily.
At a meeting on Wednesday (November 17th), town councillors considered the plans and decided they had no observations or concerns.
Cllr Sue Harvey said: “It will be good to see the premises back in use.”
And Cllr Andy Brewer added: “There is no change of use planned, it’s just a change of owner and the gambling business is heavily regulated.”
We reported here last year that William Hill had announced the permanent closure of its Burnham-On-Sea branch as part of a major ‘nationwide restructuring’. The bookies had initially shut down ‘temporarily’ at the start of the first lockdown in March 2020. However, it later changed the status of the closure as “permanent” in July 2020.
A final decision on the application rests with Sedgemoor District Council.
