Young people encouraged to join National Citizen Service scheme

-

Young people in the Burnham-On-Sea area are being encouraged to sign up to take part in the Government’s new flagship personal and social development programme.

National Citizen Service (NCS) is a scheme which offers 16 and 17 year olds from different backgrounds valuable life experiences, through team and individual challenges.

Bridgwater College has been selected to run the scheme for young people across Sedgemoor, including Burnham and Highbridge.

“Participants make new friends and challenge themselves throughout the programme, taking on outward bound activities like gorge walking and white water rafting, plus developing and delivering social action projects on local issues that matter to them. NCS enables young people to develop important skills that they can take with them into the world of work,” said a spokesman.

Leon Troake, Activity Centre Manager at Bridgwater College, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “This is the first time Bridgwater College has offered the whole four week scheme, and we are very excited about it. It gives school leavers a chance to meet people who they may be studying with if they decide to enrol at Bridgwater College while doing some really valuable work within the community.”

Research has found that the proportion of young people saying they were planning to continue in education after NCS increased from 27% to 34%. Also, 95% of young people reported that NCS gave them the chance to develop useful skills for the future. For more information call 01278 655066 or sign-up online here.
