Berrow Road homes scheme gets the go-ahead from district planners

-

Plans to build several new homes on a patch of derelict land near Burnham-On-Sea have this week been given the go-ahead by district planners.

The proposal to develop a patch of empty land bordering Naish Road and 181 Berrow Road (pictured above) was given the go-ahead on Tuesday (May 9th) by Sedgemoor’s Development Control Committee.

The decision came despite five letters of objection from local residents in which they objected on the grounds of traffic impact and danger; parking problems; houses not being in keeping with nearby bungalows; loss of privacy; over shadowing; and loss of trees and plants.

Planners gave delegated permission to the scheme, subject to a badger survey being conducted after it emerged that a sett could be sited on the land.

A spokesman said: “It has been brought to this council’s attention by third parties, including English Nature, that there may be a badger sett and therefore a number of badgers on site. Badgers are a protected species under The Protection of Badgers Act 1992 and as such the agent is required to undertake/commission a comprehensive badger survey of the site.”

A seperate condition is that a financial contribution be made by the land owner towards the provision of children’s playing space and outdoor sports facilities.

“The application initially specified 12 dwellings, however the application was subsequently formally amended and the number of dwellings proposed is now unspecified and as such the application is only for the principle of residential development on the site and the means of access.”

Burnham-On-Sea.com reported in March that the scheme had been backed by Burnham Town Council’s planning committee, on the proviso that the dwellings be bungalows rather than homes, and that access should be via Naish Road.
