Burnham-On-Sea could get a new museum and visitor attraction as part of long-term proposals considered by town councillors this week.
Cllr Janet Keen, right, says Burnham needs the new facility to showcase its rich history and heritage.
Her comments came during a debate about improvements for the town centre at Monday’s Policy and Finance Committee meeting.
Burnham’s former job centre, pictured above, could be one location where the musuem could be sited.
“Burnham is lacking a museum and when you consider all the wonderful history material that we have here we have a lot to be proud of,” she said.
“Visitors need more reasons to come into Burnham and this would definitely help.”
She added: “I know it would be expensive and complicated to set up, but it would be good as a long-term objective.”
Cllr Nick Tolley was among fellow councillors who supported the idea. He said: “I’d like to see something like the museum in Weston where the exhibits change frequently to stay fresh. There’s lots of local history here that could be shown.”

Cllr Kate Lawson added: “It would be fantastic for Burnham to have a museum – educating children, helping students and serving as a visitor attraction.”
“Could it be run in conjunction with local businesses, the history group and the tourist information centre, all under one roof?”
Possible locations for the facility could be Burnham-On-Sea’s former job centre which remains vacant ten years since its closure or Burnham-On-Sea’s former adult learning centre which closed in December 2017.
A Town Council working group is to be formed to further investigate the idea, along with other possible improvements for the town centre.
