Burnham-On-Sea’s MP, David Heathcoat-Amory, has visited two care homes treating autistic people in the town.
Mr Heathcoat-Amory began his visit at Stafford Lodge before moving on to Holly Tree Cottage where he was served lunch by resident Robin Hookings. Lunch included a chocolate cake baked specially that morning by Robin.
Homes Caring for Autism Ltd runs both the autism-specific care homes and during his visit, the MP met managers, staff and residents.
He said: “Autism is a complex condition which is often misunderstood. It is good to see the high level of care that is available for young autistic men, which includes getting them out into the community.”
Richard Smith, Managing Director of Homes Caring for Autism Ltd, added: “We’re delighted that Mr Heathcoat-Amory found time to visit us and it was nice to see that he was knowledgeable about autism and was aware of the challenges that autistic people may face.”
“Our philosophy is to promote independence and community integration for everyone in our care. Being aware of and engaging in the democratic process is part of that.”
