Students’ questions ‘tougher than in Parliament’, says Burnham’s MP

-

Burnham-On-Sea’s MP found questions from school students can tougher than in the House of Commons when he visited Highbridge’s King Alfred School on Monday (September 14th).

During the visit, Mr Heathcoat-Amory met headteacher Dr Keith Diffey and held two question-and-answer sessions with sixth form students.

The MP gave the students an insight into the workings of parliament, and also discussed the varied geographical and economic make-up of the Wells constituency.

The students were invited to put forward their own questions, which covered topics such as globalisation, climate change, reducing the voting age to sixteen and the policy of sixteen year-olds paying taxes even though they cannot vote.

Other students raised the subject of the controversial Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA), which was deemed to be unfair by some as it is means-tested.

Mr Heathcoat-Amory told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “School question times are often more testing than the House of Commons. I hope it sparked an interest in current affairs and the need to participate in the political system.”
