Burnham-On-Sea’s MP Tessa Munt has met members of a threatened disabled users group this week.
Burnham’s Over 60’s Disabled Group, which meets at the town’s Baptist Church every Monday, offers essential support services to disabled people in the area and is run by social services.
Financial support from Somerset County Council is soon to be removed and the group feels volunteers will not be sufficiently qualified to run the session on their own.
Tessa told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “For many of the elderly who meet here each Monday, this is the only trip out each week.”
“We shouldn’t underestimate the importance of social services’ support for people who may need extra help with their daily lives.”
“This is another example of a vital ‘lifeline’ service to the elderly and less able being withdrawn due to over-excessive cuts at Somerset County Council. I urge the County Councillors to reconsider their decision and explore ways of maintaining this and other groups under threat.”
“The County Councillors are looking at the costs – and they can save a little money by withdrawing the qualified workers. But the members really enjoy their weekly outing and this Group appreciates the expertise and help the support workers give them.”
