Burnham-On-Sea’s MP has this week been presented with one of the first copies of a new book featuring the colourful history of the town’s community centre in Berrow Road.
Written by Veronica Richardson, the archivist of Burnham’s University of the Third Age, the book was handed to David Heathcoat-Amory.
Ken Henton, Secretary of Burnham’s U3A, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “This interesting history chronicles the life of the Community Centre from the 1830s, when it was built by Dr Walker King, Bishop of Rochester, as a private house.”
“The book also looks at the property’s time as a home for the blind and in more recent times as a youth centre, becoming eventually a centre for the Burnham Community Association leased from its owners Sedgemoor District Council.”
This week’s presentation was conducted by the Burnham Community Association’s Chairman, Ken Hindle, and was aimed at raising the profile of the centre and assisting in its ongoing campaign to raise funds for repairs. Copies of the book are available from the Community Centre priced at £2.50 each.
