Burnham-On-Sea’s MP James Heappey says Brexit deal is ‘not perfect’ but he will support it

-

Burnham-On-Sea’s MP has said he will support Prime Minister Theresa May’s Brexit deal.

James Heappey said the draft withdrawal agreement between the UK and the EU is “not perfect” and “not what I’d hoped for” but he is supporting it.

The MP said on social media: “Been briefed on the deal. Not perfect and backstop is not what I’d hoped for. But we’re out, we’re not subject to European Court of Justice (ECJ), free movement ends and we’re not paying vast sums to ECJ. Will support.”

A House of Commons debate and vote on the deal is expected to go ahead in December.

The 585-page draft withdrawal agreement has now been published, alongside a shorter statement setting out what the UK and EU’s future relations will look like.

In the June 2016 EU referendum, residents in Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge voted to leave the EU. Across Sedgemoor, there were 41,869 votes to leave and 26,545 votes to remain. Several polling stations in Burnham and Highbridge reported 70% turnouts, far bigger than previous General Elections.
