Burnham-On-Sea MP David Heathcoat-Amory has marked his 25th year in parliament at a special function this week.
Wells Town Hall was full when constituents, friends and family members of Mr Heathcoat-Amory gathered to celebrate the anniversary of his election as an MP.
Lord Strathclyde, the Leader of the Conservative Party in the House of Lords, proposed a toast to Mr Heathcoat-Amory and went on to say: “David is held in high regard in political circles and I am very proud to have him as a him as a friend.”
He added: “In his role as an MP he is renowned throughout his constituency for the help he has given to others.”
Councillor Alan Ham paid tribute to his work in the constituency and reminded members that he was selected from a strong field of candidates, including a number who went on to enter parliament elsewhere, including Ann Widdecombe, Roger Gale and Eric Forth, as well as Boris Johnson’s father, Stanley Johnson.
Mr Heathcoat-Amory’s final selection took place on 22nd April 1983 and the general election was held on 9th June 1983.
Mr Heathcoat-Amory said: “I have thoroughly enjoyed being MP for the Wells Constituency since 1983 and hope to continue into the future.”
He thanked those present for attending the special occasion, and went on to say: “I could not have continued without the support of my wife Linda, who has constantly provided me with support and encouragement throughout the last 25 years. I therefore dedicate this dinner to her.”
Mr Heathcoat-Amory was presented with a bottle of 1983 port by the Conservative Association President Dr George Newns.
Linda Heathcoat-Amory was presented with a bouquet of flowers by the President’s wife, Patricia Newns.
The dinner was attended by many former association officers, councillors, staff from his local office in Wells and many guests from both inside and outside the constituency.
During his 25 years as an MP, Mr Heathcoat-Amory has gained the respect of MPs across the political divide. Liberal Democrat Leader Nick Clegg recently referred to him as “a man of great integrity.”
