A new promotion has been launched in Burnham-On-Sea to boost town centre shops in the wake of last week’s Morrisons closure as talks continue over the site’s future.
New signs have been installed outside the former Morrisons store in Pier Street to promote independent shops in a bid to keep trade in the town.
Morrisons closed down its store at the end of November with the loss of dozens of jobs. Rumours have been circulating in recent days that several retailers may be interested in taking over the site.
Town Centre Manager Bev Milner Simonds told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “As the Town Centre Manager I am continuing my frequent communication between Burnham Chamber of Trade, the freeholder and Sedgemoor District Council, sharing information as and when we each receive it. This has included passing on leads from members of the public.”
“I have also worked with various parties over the past week in order to put up information boards outside the store which stress that Burnham-On-Sea is open for business.”
She added: “Burnham has a great range of shopping and businesses, 72% of which are independents. Many of these offer the same goods and services that were available at Morrisons and I urge people to explore the town centre.”
