Police have raised a formal objection to plans by a club in Highbridge to stay open until 3.30am for a special event later this month.
Morlands Social Club has applied to Sedgemoor District Council for a one-off Temporary Event Notice on February 24th to stay open for an extra two hours after its usual Saturday closing time of 1.30am.
But the request to hold the event – a 65th birthday party for a club member – has caused concerns from Burnham and Highbridge Police.
In a letter to the council, Sgt Ian Kennett writes: “On behalf of the Chief Officer of Police for Avon and Somerset Constabulary I formally object to the event on the grounds that holding the event until 3.30am will cause a public nuisance when guests are leaving the location and cause an inconvenience to neighbours.”
“We also feel that if people are drinking until 3.30am there is an increased risk of crime and disorder. We feel that the licensable hours until 1.30am on a Saturday is adequate for this event.”
The club says the event would be carefully managed to minimise the impact on the local community.
A final decision on whether to allow the event to go ahead will be made by Sedgemoor District Council’s Licensing and Gambling Panel when it meets on February 15th.
