Town councillors have this week expressed concerns at plans for a proposed new convenience store in Highbridge.
The new grocery store is earmarked for land at the junction of Morland Road and Burnham Road on the former Morlands Industrial Park.
Town councillors on the Burnham and Highbridge Planning Applications Committee reviewed the plans at a meeting this week and raised a formal objection over proposed early morning deliveries to “safeguard residents”.
Normal deliveries would go ahead from 7am-11pm on weekdays and 8am-9pm at weekends, but the store also wants to make early morning deliveries of newspapers and magazines outside of these times.
Cllr Louise Parkin said: “I am completely against this – it is a residential area. I object on the grounds of supporting the nearby residents from potential noise and disturbance early in the morning.”
Deputy Town Clerk Lorna Williams said the council is trying to find out the times of the early morning deliveries, which were not specified in the application.
Cllr John Parkes told the meeting: “The demographic of this area is that there are lots of young families, so the hours are very important.”
Calderwood Property Developments Ltd is seeking full planning permission to build the store. It would have 210 square metres of floor space and the building would also include first floor accommodation for a shop manager. There would also be room for 15 parking spaces outside the store.
Plans for a store at the site were initially granted in August 2015, and this new application refers to a variation of a condition on a previous planning application.
Sedgemoor District Council is inviting comments on the plans by August 11th. The planning application number is 11/17/00092.
