Concerned council house tenants in Highbridge have launched an online petition calling on the government to give residents more power to demand local councils repair their crumbling homes.
A group of residents from the Morland Road estate has launched the petition and also written to the boss of Homes In Sedgemoor calling on the authority to resolve extensive damp and subsidence problems at their homes.
Helen Groves, tenants advocate for the Highbridge Residents Association, pictured above, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Many homes here are suffering from cracking, condensation and damp problems. Several are also showing signs of subsidence, which is a concern for the residents.”
“The condition is deteriorating and the quick fixes and workarounds that the council frequently suggests are unsatisfactory.”
The association’s Tina Gray added: “We know Sedgemoor has very little money at the moment for improvements, but we don’t expect residents to have to live in damp and dangerous homes.”
“Our petition has been launched to try and raise awareness of the problems nationally and get some action.”
The association has launched its online petition here in its attempt to get a better deal for tenants.
The petition states: “The petitioners therefore request that the House of Commons amend current legislation giving tenants the power to make informed decisions by the mandatory disclosure of any significant known defect within a property, any recurring defect, provision or access to maintenance logs, and equal provision of services such as Environmental Health.”
