Burnham-On-Sea group raises money for new hospital wheelchairs
Kind-hearted members of the Burnham-On-Sea branch of Moose International have donated two new wheelchairs to Weston Hospital’s Quantock Rehabilitation unit.
It comes after lodge member Chris Harris’s wife Rita was undergoing long-term treatment at Weston Hospital earlier in the year and, during a walk around the grounds, Chris stumbled upon a store of broken-down wheelchairs.
On further enquiries with the rehabilitation unit, he discovered that wheelchairs were constantly wearing out, and the badly broken ones were stored, for the use of spare parts.
When Chris became lodge Governor during April of this year, he had already elected to nominate this cause as one of his Governor’s charities. With the help from the proceeds of the Governor’s barbecue and some additional fund-raising he would have been able to purchase the unit a brand-new wheelchair.
As it turned out, there was enough money to purchase two wheelchairs, and the items were presented at the latest lodge meeting to representatives of Quantock Rehabilitation Unit.
Chris said: “I feel this is one small way to say thank you to all the staff and helpers at the unit, who looked after Rita so well when she was undergoing treatment.”
The photo shows Dr Ruth Roberts, Katherine Watts, Lodge Governor Chris Harris, Nikki Mansell, Fiona Henchie, Maureen Rennolds, and Sarah Woolland. Rita Harris is in the front with the donated wheelchairs on either side of her.
