A family of tiny moorhen chicks whose nest was damaged during ongoing dredging on the Somerset Levels have been rescued by wildlife carers near Burnham-On-Sea.
The nest of moorhen chicks was disturbed while dredging was taking place in a rhyne near the village of Mark.
“The two tiny chicks and two eggs were collected and brought to Secret World at the height of summer in July,” the charity’s Debbie O’Keefe told Burnham-On-Sea.com.
“Their tiny eggs were placed in an incubator on-site and amazingly one day later the tiny chick emerged which left us with three chicks to rear.”
“These birds are incredibly difficult to rear due to their lifestyle, however staff and volunteers were delighted to see them flourish and all three have been successfully released back into the wild this month, much to the delight of the original finders.”
