Model train enthusiasts gather in Burnham-On-Sea for annual exhibition
Model train enthusiasts of all ages gathered at a two-day exhibition in Burnham-On-Sea this weekend.
The popular Sedgemoor Rail event, now in its 27th year, was held on Saturday August 27th and Sunday 28th at King Alfred’s School and attracted more than 1,000 people.
Over 20 model railway layouts from all over the country were exhibited, some of which have not been seen in the area before.
Alongside this, some 17 local and national traders were in attendance, selling a wide range of model railway equipment, books and videos.
The overall winner was Christchurch Model Railway Club, whose superb Ashton Junction layout caught the eyes of judges. It won the coveted Chairman’s Shield.
“It’s taken three people from our club just over a year to make and has cost more than £1,000,” said the Christchurch group’s Rod Haines. “But winning this award and seeing so many people enjoying looking at it makes it worth it.”
Their layout featured a fictional GWR country station with a small engine shed, goods yard and GWR locos and rolling stock.
Local modellers were also on hand to give demonstrations on various aspects of the hobby.
Terry Allen, who is one of the organisers from Burnham and District Model Railway Club, told Burnham-On-Sea.com that the event had been “another success”, attracting 700 visitors on the Saturday and a similar crowd on Sunday.
The annual exhibition has been described by both visitors and exhibitors alike as one of the ‘friendliest’ Model Railway Exhibitions in the UK. The 2006 event will be held on Saturday August 26th and Sunday August 27th.
