Police have appealed for witnesses after a break-in at a model railway attraction near Burnham-On-Sea this week.
West Huntspill Model Engineering Society’s facilities suffered damage in the “pointless” attack.
Several signs besides the track have been vandalised, a window was pushed in, and a brass plaque to mark the station’s opening was stolen, along with several other items.
The group’s Ashley Edwards told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “It has come as a blow – we’re only a small attraction and operate on a limited income. Quite why anyone would want to do this is beyond us.”
“The incidents occurred between 10.00pm on Monday (August 25th) and 10am on Wednesday (August 27th). The plaque that was stolen commemorated the donation of monies by the late Bernard Escritt, in memory of his wife, for the first extension of the railway in 1987 so it was a treasured item by the club. A set of keys and a photo were also taken.”
The model railway station’s team of helpers have vowed to be open as normal to the public this Sunday (August 31st) from 2-4.30pm and then each Sunday until October. The attraction is based at The Memorial Playing Field off New Road in West Huntspill.
Anyone with information about this week’s incident should contact Burnham-On-Sea Police on the non-emergency number 101.
