The proposed merger of two Highbridge schools was given the go-ahead by the county council on Wednesday (December 9th).
As first reported by Burnham-On-Sea.com in April, proposals to amalgamate Beechfield Infants School and St John’s Church of England Junior School have been under consideration for several months by Somerset County Council.
The merger was given the go-ahead at a full council meeting held at County Hall in Taunton on Wednesday afternoon.
The newly amalgamated school will open after next year’s summer holidays in September 2010.
Included in the proposal is a plan to replace the current infants and junior school buildings with a brand new 14-class school, which is to be built on the current site at a cost of £6.3 million. The new school building is planned to open in September 2012.
The proposals had generally received positive feedback, although a 33-name petition has been presented to the council in opposition in September.
