A former school secretary from Highbridge has this week received her MBE award during a ceremony at Buckingham Palace.
Elizabeth Hughes, who was secretary of Beechfield Infant School in Highbridge, was chosen earlier this year for her services to education.
She worked at the school for more than 30 years, beginning as a teaching assistant, and moving on to become clerk of the governors for 22 years.
After receiving her MBE from the Queen at Buckingham Palace, she told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “It was an amazing experience for both myself and my family.”
“The Investiture was held in the Palace’s Ballroom, an extremely beautiful room with marvellous decoration and artwork.”
“Her Majesty was most charming and asked what position I had held at the school, to which I replied that I was the School Secretary and had been at Beechfield School for over 30 years.”
“She congratulated me and said she felt the education of the very young to be extremely important.”
The MBE was awarded to Elizabeth following a nomination from the school’s headteacher and governors.
