Burnham’s Mayoress gives ‘heartfelt thanks’ after Phillippines tragedy

-

Burnham-On-Sea’s Mayoress – who has family in the Philippines – has this week spoken of her ‘complete shock’ at the devastation left by Typhoon Haiynan which has killed thousands of people.

Arlene Cox, Mayoress of Burnham and Highbridge, says she has been overwhelmed by the support shown locally after last weekend’s disaster.

Typhoon Haiyan left a huge amount of devastation across the Philippines and the official death toll stands at more than 2,300, but it is feared this could rise much higher.

Arlene, pictured with her husband Mayor Martin Cox, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Fortunately, my family are fine as they are based in the north of the country but my heart goes out to all those fellow Philippines who have been affected or lost relatives and friends.”

“I have been so upset and tearful watching the TV coverage over the past few days. It is so sad and devastating to see what has happened. So many people have lost everything they own. I have been praying for the lost souls.”

“At the same time it has been so heart-warming to see how people across the UK have shown theur concern and have been keen to give support to the Philippines.”

“I have been very emotional several times this week when I have seen the kindness. It is wonderful to see the unity across the world in offering help at this terrible time.”

She added: “Several people in Burnham have asked me whether my family have been affected and I thank them for their interest and kind words.”

Arlene’s husband, Mayor Martin Cox, said: “It reinforces your faith in the goodwill of people at times like this, both locally in the Burnham area and across the world. We just hope those affected receive the help they need.”
