A prized classic car worth tens of thousands of pounds was destroyed in a blaze near Burnham-On-Sea on Wednesday.
Fire crews from Burnham were called to the blazing Maserati on the A38 outside Brent Knoll’s Sanders Garden World just before 3.30pm.
“Crews found the car well alight, and used two breathing apparatus and two hose reel jets to extinguish the fire,” a fire spokesman told Burnham-On-Sea.com. It is believed that a fault within the car’s gear box caused the blaze.
The distraught owner of the vehicle, who was unhurt, said the car recently won a prize at a leading classic car awards ceremony.
Eyewitness Ian Wood told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “The flames quickly took hold in the engine compartment. The smoke could be seen from quite a distance away and the traffic backed up but the emergency services quickly brought the situation under control.”
