Brave Burnham pensioner, 80, set for 150ft abseil down Clifton Gorge

A brave Burnham-On-Sea pensioner is set to abseil down Clifton Gorge this weekend to raise funds for the town’s carnival club.

Mary Nicholson, 80, helped to set up Hillview Carnival Club 41 years ago and says she wanted to do something special to celebrate the organisation’s fourth decade.

She told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “My grandchildren gave me the abseil down Clifton Gorge as an amusing birthday present for my 80th back in March and I’m actually really looking forward to doing it!”

“I have always been a bit of an intrepid person who loves challenges. That’s just me – the way I have always been!”

She will be undertaking the 150ft abseil on Sunday August 30th, watched by family and supporters.
