The organisers of Highbridge’s weekly outdoor markets have begun talks with Sedgemoor District Council to try and secure their future.
Burnham-On-Sea.com reported last year how the district council had struck a deal with Market Forces to operate the weekly events on a three month trial basis from the Bank Street Car Park.
However, that trial is due to come to an end during the next fortnight – and talks have begun between the two parties to keep the markets running.
Sedgemoor District Council’s Tim Mander told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “The trial period is due to finish in early February and, as a result, Market Forces will have to apply for formal planning permission.”
He added: “The market was well supported in the run-up to Christmas, but was quieter during January. We’d like to see it continue.”
Planning permission is required because the stalls can occupy up to 50 car parking spaces at the Bank Street site, pictured right.
Fred Brown, spokesman for Market Forces, confirmed to Burnham-On-Sea.com that the talks are underway. “We hope to have some more news on this in 2-3 weeks,” he said.
