An 18 year-old man has been arrested following a drugs search which ended in a ‘violent struggle’ and the assault of a policeman in the centre of Highbridge last night (Tuesday).
Following reports of anti-social behaviour on Highbridge Town Green in Market Street, Highbridge beat officers PCs Adrian Jones and Ryan Dinham carried out a drugs search on an 18 year old male at 5.50pm.
However, the man, who was named by police as Dwain Huxtable, became abusive to officers and assaulted PC Dinham. He was arrested, resulting in a violent struggle.
The teenager was later charged with a public order offence, assault on police and possession of cannabis and will appear at Sedgemoor Magistrates court on 9th November.
Sergeant Ian Kennett told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “The Highbridge beat team are committed to tackling drug dealing and antisocial behaviour and this latest positive action continues to promote the message that this behaviour will not be tolerated.”
“We have listened to community concerns and have acted whenever possible.”
Members of the community can have their say at the next Highbridge PACT meeting, which will be held at 7.30 pm next Thursday (21st October) at St John’s Hall when a report will be given on what the police and other agencies have done to address the issues raised at the last meeting in July.
