The hottest day of the year didn’t stop this group of hardy Royal Marines from going ahead with a fundraising run through the Burnham-On-Sea area on Tuesday (June 20th).
They are taking part in the ‘1664 Global Challenge’ from April to August, running 16.64 miles a day for 100 days all in to support The Royal Marines Charity.
The continuity event is a 1664 mile run around major towns and cities in the UK – 1664 because that was the year the Royal Marines were formed.
They are being supported by Commando and Reserve units along the way, and for the next six days, 40 Commando is providing that support.
Burnham-On-Sea was the first of 40 Commando’s six finish locations. They will hand over the baton to 45 Commando in Scotland on 26th June. The unit will run approximately 100 miles over the six-day period.
“This challenge is an opportunity for the Corps Family to come together under one banner and to do something for their Charity. All 16 Commando and Reserve units have agreed to take part, making a truly Corps event,” a spokesman told Burnham-On-Sea.com.
“In addition to the run we are also attempting to organise a further 100 weird and wonderful challenges around the globe in the 100 day period.”
“These have included Lima Company from 42 Commando lifting the weight of HMS Ocean whilst running the distance home (that was about 21,500 tonnes and 10,000km from the Middle East to Plymouth in just 20 days).”
“We have a detachment of Royal Marines Reserve City of London climbing over 30,000 feet on 30 foot ropes and a PTI here at CTCRM planning to drag himself along a rope underwater for 10 days, aiming for just over 34 miles.”
“Also on the horizon is a 166.4 mile cycle from Devon to Dorset. We have had the Royal Marines Association supporting virtually every unit and our brilliant Royal Marines Cadets have taken up the baton organising their own amazing challenges during their parade evenings.”
