Scores of green-fingered residents joined a special gardening workshop at Burnham-On-Sea’s Marine Cove gardens on Saturday (19th May).
The session, organised by Sedgemoor District Council and Somerset Skills and Learning, provided an opportunity to brush up on basic gardening skills at the recently-restored seafront gardens.
The day began with an introduction to Marine Cove and some horticultural knowledge shared by Community Gardener Jacqui Strong.
Rachel Jones from Plant Life, a charity which carries out plant species and habitat conservation, was on hand to provide information about using the natural resources that a garden can offer.
Jacqui told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “The group took part in sowing seeds and taking cuttings from shrubs and other different plants.”
“Plant Life were on hand with an activity looking at bees and how they pollinate and collect nectar. Learners had the chance to be a bee!”
Other upcoming events at the gardens in coming weeks include Saturday 2nd June – a Jubilee celebration afternoon with Punch and Judy at 2pm, 3pm and 4pm. Between these times there will also be entertainment from a traditional fair ground barrell organ.
Then on Sunday 3rd June during the evening there will be a performance by Burnham and Highbridge Churches Together where a Songs of Praise style event will be held at 6.30pm. In the event of wet weather St Andrews church will be the venue.
On Tuesday 5th June, cream teas will be served for £3.00 in the garden by the volunteers of Marine Cove and the local WI. Burnham and Highbridge Town Band will be entertaining the audience from 2pm along with Punch and Judy at regular intervals.
A further follow-on event will be held on 16th June from 10am-4pm when residents will be able to take a ‘walk on the wild side’ with ecologist Pete Grainger while undertaking a wildlife search using bug jars and researching the habitats in and around the gardens.
