The £360,000 project to refurbish Burnham-On-Sea’s Marine Cove gardens is nearing completion and the facilities have this week been re-opened to the public.
The bulk of the work has been finished and a formal opening ceremony is being scheduled for mid-December.
“The works at Marine Cove are virtually complete and visitors can now enjoy them in their refurbished splendour,” Sedgemoor District Council spokeswoman Claire Faun told Burnham-On-Sea.com.
“Despite the last minute hitches with works, the gardens are open, with the official opening ceremony being scheduled for December 10th at 3pm.”
The project was held up last month when, as Burnham-On-Sea.com reported here, the main building company, St Blaise, called in the administrators, causing the project to be placed on hold for several weeks.
The district council had to appoint local contractors to enable the remaining work to be completed.
Work carried out over the past fortnight includes the painting of the shelters, completion of tarmac work, stonemason’s work, replacement of the sundial, new lighting, plus completion of the fence, benches, pointing and pond.
The £360,000 refurbishment project – which has been part-funded with £344,200 from the Heritage Lottery Fund – includes landscaping, walls, fencing, lighting, paving, seating and water features.
The project is also being funded by Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge Town Council, Viridor Credits and Sedgemoor District Council. To become a volunteer helper at Marine Cove contact Jacqui Strong, its Community Gardener, by email here.
