Ambitious plans to modernise Burnham-On-Sea’s Marine Cove gardens took another step forward this week when town councillors pledged thousands of pounds towards the project.
Nicola Slawski, Group Manager of Regeneration for Sedgemoor District Council, told a meeting in Burnham on Monday evening (March 3rd) that a bid for National Lottery cash to finance the project is on track, but the funds would need to be supplemented by town council cash.
The council decided in principle to give two sums of £5,000 towards the scheme over the next three years, plus a one-off amount of £4,500.
The project, which is not likely to be completed before 2011, will see the existing boarded-up shelters replaced, a new fountain introduced, the pool being renewed, all stonework restored, and the flower beds raised to make them more visible.
Councillors welcomed the project, with Deputy Mayor Cllr Neville Jones saying it “is much needed to bring these wonderful gardens back to their former glory” and Cllr Dennis Davey adding that the project represents “an exciting plan”.
Nicola Slawski added that the bid for lottery funding would be formally logged at the end of March and that she hopes to hear later in the year whether it has been successful.
