M5 roadworks at Burnham won’t be lifted over Bank Holiday weekend

-

Miles of roadworks on the M5 motorway at Burnham-On-Sea will continue over the Bank Holiday weekend.

The traditional surge towards Somerset, Devon and Cornwall at Bank Bolidays often brings the motorway to a standstill and the issue could be worse than normal with one lane set to be shut southbound.

The Highways Agency, which is overseeing the work, has postponed 75 per cent of its roadworks programmes across the country during the holiday weekend, however the one-lane closure between Weston at junction 21 and Burnham at junction 22 will remain.

An agency spokesman said it cannot be lifted because at the moment the central renovation work is incomplete and safety is vital. The speed limit has also been dropped to 50mph in the affected area.

The hard shoulder will be made available for drivers, with the agency saying it expects only “slight delays.”
